If you have a passion for the theater, love dramatic expression and creative writing, and want to explore playwriting in a professional theater setting, this is the summer program for you! Summer Ink! offers aspiring dramatists and creative writers a progressive four-week study of the craft of playwriting.
Summer Ink! is taught by skilled and experienced teaching artists from McCarter’s Education Department and supported by members of the theatre’s artistic, literary and casting departments.
Playwriting students enjoy guided outings to Broadway and Off-Broadway theaters in New York, as well as to local summer theatres.
The high points of the program are the workshop sessions when young playwrights have the opportunity to hear their scenes or plays read by professional actors, who provide the gifts of their voices, bodies and spirits to enliven those words.
Workshops are followed by feedback sessions with playwrights, teaching artists and dramaturgs.
Rehearsal drafts of the plays are given to McCarter-affiliated directors, actors are cast, and the plays are rehearsed for “script-in-hand” performances.
The culmination of the program is a two-night Summer Ink! Festival of New Ten-Minute Plays in front of a live audience.
