Julian Krinsky founded The Julian Krinsky School of Tennis in 1978. As a former tennis player on the international tennis circuit, Julian played in Wimbledon and the French and Italian Opens. Julian represented his native South Africa and the United States at the Maccabiah Games, where he competed in tennis and squash, winning medals in 1969, 1973, and 1981. The Julian Krinsky School of Tennis is one of the world's foremost tennis programs. 

Julian has been asked plenty of tennis related questions over the years and we thought it would be best to chronicle those questions with his educated answers.

Question:  My child is 15 years old, should I encourage them to play singles or doubles?

Julian says, "Most students I see prefer singles because they find it easier. Doubles requires a greater varierty of strokes and tactics than singles and forces players to volley more. Personally, I like the aspect of a team sport and find double to be more fun. I encourage students to practice playing both singles and doubles. Singles may be on top at the professional level, but doubles is very important in college tennis. Tennis is a game you can play for life! Challenge yourself by playing both singles and doubles. Who knows which one you will want to play when you get older. For example, here is a lady who still plays at our club at 90 years old!"

Question: There are so many choices when purchasing a tennis racket. How do I know which one is best for me?

Julian says, "When in the market for a new tennis racket: demo, demo, demo. Everyone has a personal feel and each racket and string tension will feel a little different to each player. Try a variety of demo rackets every time you play and be sure to get some good advice from your tennis professional. When you find a racket you like buy at least two. The manufacturers tend to come out with new models each year and your favorite racket may not be available next year."

Question: Should I spend my time taking more lessons or playing more matches? 

Julian says, "For every one hour lesson you take, you should try to get four to five hours of practice and match play. Lessons teach the basic strokes needed to play competitively, but matches are essential for learning to win."

Question: Julian, is it better to play with a one- or two-handed backhand?

Julian says, "I like a combination of both.  Try using a two-handed return of serve and when at the net, a one-  handed volley.  When switching from a forehand to a backhand, don’t forget to quickly switch your grip.  Many two-handed hitters do not change their dominant hand grip when going from a forehand to a backhand. Therefore, players end up with a weak one-handed volley with the wrong grip."   

Question: I know I'm a good tennis player, but I can't seem to win my matches?

Julian says, "Visualization is about seeing a stroke or tactic in your mind and trying to imitate it. I always encourage our players to read Tennis Magazine and watch professional matches. Attending professional players in person helps you identify a stroke you would like to copy."

Question: Should I use a swinging volley?

Julian says,  "The swinging volley is gaining popularity, especially amongst young women.  This shot gives greater power at the expense of finesse.  Compared to the block or stop volley, good timing is vital to the proper execution of this volley.  Indeed, it is a very exciting shot if you can master it."   

Question: What do you look for when choosing a doubles partner?

Julian says, "Speed is not a serious criterion for a great serve. However, if you would like to increase your serve's speed, practice throwing tennis balls over the net and throwing old tennis rackets out of the court! This drill will help build your tricep muscels while teaching you to hip up at the ball when serving."

Julian Krinsky’s Summer Internships program gives students an opportunity to truly learn about the industry they wish to have a career in. In this case, that's exactly the opportunity David Hirschy took advantage of. 

David would describe himself best as ambitious, insightful, and hard-working. Prior to David’s internship experience he had a goal of being accepted into the Wharton School of Business at the University of Penn in Philadelphia and expressed a strong interest in the finance industry.

David Hirschy came to Philadelphia for his internship from Auburn, Indiana. In Indiana, David served as the Speech and Debate Co-President and qualified for the National Speech and Debate Tournament in 2011. He was elected the Executive Secretary of the student body in 2011-2012 while also continuing academic honors distinction. 

Last March, JKCP secured an internship for David in the business industry. David was placed in the business and finance industry with A & I Ventures, a venture investment firm founded by Marc Ecko, the Chief Creative Officer of Ecko Unltd. and Eckored which is a clothesline for young men and women. Their investments are within innovation-driven companies in the Media & Entertainment, Mobile, Greentech, Healthcare, and Business 2.0 industries.  

When David finished his internship at A & I Ventures, located in Philadelphia, he confirmed that his strengths and attributes carried over perfectly into the finance industry. David’s time at his internship honed his existing skills, but most of all it helped him build a foundation of connections.

“The connections I made to venture capital will undoubtedly prove to be invaluable”, said David. He continues, “what’s more, working in venture capital and adding value to a variety of portfolio companies equates to becoming a mini-expert in a number of industries.” The contacts David made during his time, as an intern could essentially be the most important aspect of his internship with A & I Ventures.

After being introduced to a new sector in the finance industry: venture capital, he plans on pursuing international banking. As for David’ goal being accomplished….we are proud to announce that David Hirschy was accepted early decision to the Wharton School of Business. We wish David all the best in his future endeavors. 

We are proud of our camps and programs. We are even more proud of where they take place….in Philadelphia. Philadelphia is a great city and all of our campuses reside within the city of Philadelphia.

This post courtesy of  Hope Calder-Katz. Hope was a camper with Julian Krinsky School of Tennis in 1988 and has since been named the Vice President and Associate General Counsel of Hitachi Consulting. 

When I realized that I wanted to pursue tennis as more than just a hobby, my parents enrolled me for a week at (Julian Krinsky School of Tennis) JKST. I was just ten years old and as shy as could be. I was terrified when my parents pulled away from Haverford College, but within hours I was welcomed with open arms by Julian Krinsky and the rest of the counselors and campers. I met people from all over the world and had a unique international experience unlike anything I could have ever imagined. I also loved my time on the courts. To this day I will never forget conditioning sessions with one of the pros named Dave who made us chant the “we are going to the garden to eat worms” song. One awards ceremony later, I left with the “friendliest camper award” (which I cherish and still have to this day—see below picture) and a trip to New York City where Julian drove a school bus filled with campers back to the dorms and then my week was sadly over. There was no question that I would return and one summer quickly turned into five with each stay being longer than the one before. 

Several weeks ago I was attending an exhibition match where Andre Agassi was the featured player.  As a teenager I idolized Andre and had every picture ever printed of him pasted on my dorm room at Gummere Hall (one of the JKST dorms on the Haverford campus). Needless to say that all of the memories of JKST came rushing back – doing tennis drills at Narberth tennis club, the Saturday excursions, Friday night award ceremonies, and afternoon walks to WaWa. But what stood out about JKST most of all was my time spent getting to know a great group of people. At 34 years old, I am still in touch the friends I made at JKST, not to mention Julian.  It is great to catch up with him and learn about how the camp has grown since my first summer in 1988. I know that my days as a camper are long gone, but I am really looking forward to becoming a parent of JKST campers, and with my oldest being three years old, it will be here before I know it!
