FAQs - Nurses

Working Conditions

What is the health care setup?
We have two nurses on duty at one location for the middle school residential program. At the residential camps, the health suite usually has a general administration area for the nursing staff, an isolation room and a recovery room.

What is the scope of medical care provided?
We operate from standing orders that are provided by a local general practitioner. Any medical complaint that falls outside the scope of the standing orders and is beyond your abilities as a nurse will be referred to the general practitioner or directly to the emergency room, depending on the severity of the condition. There is also a visiting sports physiologist who will be able to offer advice to campers with sporting strains or injuries.

What are my responsibilities?
Nurses will be responsible for the health needs the middle school campers and camp staff. This includes dispensing all medications to campers. Campers are required to bring their medications in the original container with dosing instructions. During meals campers will approach your table in the dining center to receive their medications. Should a camper not visit you, you should notify the child’s counselor, who will be sent to find the camper and have them brought to you.

On Saturdays, you will be responsible for preparing all the campers' medications for weekend trips and departure. You may also have the opportunity to join campers and staff on one of our Saturday trips to places like New York City, Washington D.C., Baltimore, or Philadelphia. Although we have never encountered a medical need on any of our trips, we choose to have medical personnel present should a need arise. You are encouraged to have fun and enjoy the trip, but there are a few responsibilities which must be your first priority. You will be responsible for dispensing medications to campers on the trip. We will provide you with a cell phone or walkie-talkie phone which you must carry at all times on the trip so that you can be reached if a medical need occurs.

On Sundays you will be required to meet with arriving parents and campers regarding their health forms.

How does my time off work?
You will have at least two hours of scheduled time off each day and one day off per week. Your time off must be coordinated with the other nurse on campus to ensure there is always a nurse on duty. We are very flexible with your choosing your day off with the exception that you will not be able to have Sundays off, since you will be busy with arrivals.

What can I do on my days off?
The options are unlimited since most campuses are a short walking distance to a train station. A 20-minute train ride will take you to historic Philadelphia - the birthplace of America and a city rich with art, culture, history and fun. New York, Washington DC, Baltimore and Atlantic City are also accessible by train.

Or, spend the day at the largest retail shopping mall in America. The King of Prussia Mall is a short car or bus ride from camp with 400 stores, restaurants and boutiques including eight major department stores.

Please see your employment contract for the details of your pay schedule and amount.

Living Conditions

Where will I be living?
Residential nurses will be housed in a private, air-conditioned room on campus near the health suite.

What if I'm bringing children?
Some nurses enroll their children in one of our day or residential camps while they are working for us. In this case, your children will either stay with you or at the residential camp where they are enrolled, depending on their choice of camp and availability of rooms. For the most part you will not see your children during the day as they will be enjoying the activities at the camp of their choice.

Children that have not yet entered the fifth grade will not be able to participate as a residential camper, but will be permitted to participate in appropriate evening activities which are well supervised.

What food is offered?
JKCP provides three meals a day for its nursing staff. Staff and campers eat breakfast, lunch and dinner in the college cafeteria. College food service prepares quality food with a variety of choices for even the pickiest of eaters. We will also provide for your meals on camp trips when you are the nurse on duty. If you are taking a trip on your day off, you will be responsible for your own meals.

Where can I do my laundry?
Since you will be responsible for doing the laundry for the health suite at your site, you are welcome to do your own wash at our expense at the laundry facilities on campus.

How will I get around?
Because our camps are on college campuses, you can find most of what you need within walking distance. If you are required to travel from one camp site to another as part of your job, we will either provide you with a vehicle or reimburse you for your driving expenses.

How can people get in touch with me?
By phone - Although each individual camp will have its own office telephone line, campers and staff are not permitted to use camp phones for personal calls. At each college campus there are numerous public telephones available for use during your time off. We recommend that you use calling cards for these calls. In an emergency you may be contacted through our main office at 1-866-TRY-JKCP or 610-265-9401. A message will be taken and passed on to you.

Mail - All incoming mail goes through our main office and is delivered to the camps on a daily basis. Your mailing address will be:
      Your Name
      Camp Name
c/o Julian Krinsky Camps & Programs
      610 South Henderson Rd
King of Prussia, PA 19406 USA

E-Mail- You will be able to access your web-based email only at certain times throughout the summer. This includes accounts like AOL, Hotmail, and Yahoo.

Preparing for Camp

When shall I arrive?
Please arrive at 10:00 a.m. on your scheduled start date indicated in your employment agreement. New nurses will participate in orientation and be introduced to the protocols. For returning nurses, this will give you time to settle in.

How do I need to dress?
Professional appearance is essential as we strive to convey excellence in all we do. We will provide you with three to five staff shirts. Please wear a clean and non-wrinkled staff shirt with khaki slacks at all times when you are working or representing JKCP. Comfortable closed shoes are a must.

What else do I need to know about personal appearance?
There is more to presenting a professional image than the clothes you wear. In deference to concerns expressed by parents, our policy prohibits body piercings (other than discreet earrings), tattoos, or unconventional hair coloring or style. If you have a piercing such as a nose ring, we expect you to remove it for the duration of the summer. If you have any questions or concerns about this policy, please speak to us before your arrival at camp.

What else shall I bring?
Be sure to bring your PA nursing license plus the nursing license from your home state if it is other than PA. Also bring your CPR, AED and first-aid certifications.

Sandals are a good idea for your days off, but are not permitted with the uniform. You may want to bring some nicer attire for off-campus events and days off.

Soap, shampoo, toothpaste, sunscreen and other personal items are fairly cheap and easily accessible, so you don't need to weight yourself down with a summer's worth of supplies. Linens are provided, but you will want to bring your own towels.

Where can I find maps and routes for local airports and train stations?
Simply follow these links:

   •Philadelphia
   •Newark Liberty International Airport
   •King of Prussia Station

What if I still have questions?
Although we've tried to address the most frequently asked questions, you may still have concerns or areas that need clarification. If you have a question or concern that must be answered before your arrival, you may call Jennifer at 1-866-TRY-JKCP or email her at jenniferw@jkcp.com.
