WHYY: 60 years of Philadelphia

It was December 14, 1954 when WHYY first went live on the air. During the early days of the station, they operated on a shoestring budget of $50,000, and broadcasted from donated studios. 20 years later, they moved to Independence Mall West, and premiered mainstays such as A Prairie Home Companion, and All Things Considered. Now, after nearly 60 years broadcasting, the station we now know as WHYY has moved on from just radio broadcasts to numerous television channels, radio channels, and mobile applications.

JKCP is very proud to be a part of something that is so integral in the city of Philadelphia’s history. When our students come to the WHYY Film Academy, they are more than just campers, they are a part of something larger, something historic. Although the WHYY Film Academy does offer top-notch video training, what it really offers is the chance to be a part of one of the cities longest running establishments. They are a part of 60 years of history, tradition, and the city of Philadelphia.
