Congratulations to Spain on winning their first ever FIFA World Cup!
Spain’s win was celebrated especially by our students from Spain, who gathered at Haverford College to watch their team win this historic game!

Spain defeated the Netherlands in an exciting match by a final score of 1-0 in extra time. After years of disappointing finishes in the biggest of tournaments, Spain finally ended their long drought on Sunday and hoisted the FIFA World Cup Trophy.
Throughout most of the game, Spain and the Netherlands were evenly matched, with both teams having very few chances to score. It would take something special to win this final, as neither team was prepared to lose.
After a scoreless 90 minutes, the game went into extra time. With both teams surely exhausted and fatigued, players on each team knew that whichever team scored first would likely be the champion. It wasn’t until the 116th minute when the Spaniards broke the tie with a well placed shot from Spanish midfielder, Andres Iniesta.
With the win, Spain became the first European team to win a FIFA World Cup outside of Europe!
