D.C. “Bags” Bad Shopping Habits

Lawmakers garnered support for the program by publically displaying pictures of the Anacostia’s “trash islands.”Annie Gowen’s recent article in the Washington Post outlines the new manner in which D.C. plans to raise revenue and cut back on wasteful shopping habits.  If you want paper or plastic in our nation’s capital, it will cost you.  On January 1st, a new tax that charges 5 cents per bag in grocery stores went into effect.  Lawmakers estimate that the “tax will produce more than $3.6 million in revenue in the first year… and decline as awareness grows and people get used to bringing re-usable bags,” writes Gowen.

Despite the fact that lawmakers have allocated the proceeds of the campaign to the environmental renewal of the Anacostia River, there has been significant pushback from residents.  Going green, it seems, is never easy.  Still, everyone at Julian Krinsky Camps & Programs applauds this forward-thinking initiative and encourages the habitual employment of re-usable shopping bags.  “It’s an easy way to reduce our negative impact on the world around us,” says Julian Krinsky, founder or our green initiative.  So, take the opportunity to reduce your carbon footprint, now.  Your wallet will thank you, later.
