Nursing Shortage?

A lot of talk in the health care industry revolves around the idea that social security will be underfunded in the near future due to the rise in age of the baby boom generation. But one issue that is just as important, yet does not receive as much attention, is the rapid rise in demand of nurses that must also accompany the baby boom generation growing older which is creating a nursing shortage.

According to this article published by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing by the year 2025 there could be up to a 500,000 nurse shortage across the United States. It goes on to say that more than one million new and replacement nurses will be needed by 2016, making nursing the nation’s top profession in terms of projected job growth.

Julian Krinsky Camps & Programs has teamed up with the University of Pennsylvania to help begin to combat this shortage by creating the Penn Nursing Summer Institute. This is a program for rising high school juniors and seniors that allows them to work with actual Penn faculty and exposes them to an innovative classroom curriculum that covers a wide range of health-care topics. Hopefully, as more programs that teach young students about nursing arise we can renew interest in this demanding field.
